The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and the National AfCFTA Coordination Office have initiated discussions on strategies to maximize Ghana’s benefits under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
During a meeting between Dr. Fareed Kwesi Arthur, Head of the National AfCFTA Coordination Office, and Mr. Simon Madjie, CEO of GIPC, both parties proposed regional and country-level strategies to effectively address AfCFTA-related challenges.
Dr. Fareed emphasized the AfCFTA’s crucial role in driving socio-economic growth, particularly during global economic downturns. He highlighted Ghana’s significant contributions to the establishment and operationalization of the AfCFTA and stressed the need to solidify the country’s investment protocol within the broader AfCFTA framework.
“As a country, we also need to encourage the development of an investment culture—that should be our primary focus,” he stated. He further affirmed his office’s commitment to collaborating with government agencies to establish focal desks and implement a national strategy that positions Ghana to fully benefit from the regional trade pact.
Mr. Madjie underscored the importance of preparing local investors for the imminent influx of African investors as Ghana opens its business space. He noted that the government could support indigenous investors through sustainable financing and capacity-building initiatives.
To this end, he disclosed that the Centre will organize regional investment fora to educate Ghanaian businesses on the AfCFTA, its implications, and opportunities for local stakeholders.“We’ve been considering hosting regional investment fora to explore opportunities in each region and engage stakeholders on the AfCFTA and its benefits,” he revealed. “These discussions will help address key concerns—what should businesses expect? What actions can they take? What does the investment protocol mean for Ghana and for them? How can they find reliable partners across the continent?”
Mr. Madjie further emphasized the need to examine digital protocols, which significantly impact trade interactions in today’s digital economy. Additionally, he disclosed that the Centre will establish a dedicated focal desk to coordinate all AfCFTA-related matters, ensuring more impactful outcomes.
